A review of vertebrate community composition in seasonal forest pools of the northeastern United States

Abstract: Seasonally-flooded wetlands occur throughout the world and provide important foraging, resting, and breeding habitat for a broad array of organisms. This review summarizes our current understanding of vertebrate community composition at seasonal forest pools in the northeastern United States. These wetlands typically have hydroperiods that range from temporarily flooded to intermittently exposed, which reduces densities of many potential predators (e.g., fish). Current research has shown that pool hydroperiod,… Show more

“…Each of these wetland types contributes unique functions to the maintenance of surrounding ecosystems. Woodland vernal pools in the northeast are recognized as important habitat for pond-breeding amphibians, reptiles, aquatic invertebrates, and other wildlife (Colburn 2004;Paton 2005;Mitchell et al 2008;Semlitsch and Skelly 2008). New England coastal plain ponds harbor a number of rare and threatened or endangered plant taxa, as well as one taxon (Eupatorium leucolepsis var.…”

“…Also known as vernal or ephemeral pools, they provide a variety of wetland services, including water storage, groundwater recharge, water quality maintenance, and habitat for plants, invertebrates, and wildlife (Colburn 2004, Carl and Blumenshine 2005, Gibbons et al 2006). In eastern North America, seasonal pools provide habitat for pond‐breeding amphibians and reptiles (Paton 2005, McCallum 2007, Mitchell et al 2007). These wetlands may also provide habitat and resources for other species as a result of the mesic conditions and the resulting enhanced productivity relative to nearby upland areas (Mitsch and Gosselink 2000).…”
