A Review of Warm Mix Asphalt Technology: Technical, Eco-nomical and Enviromental Aspects

Abstract: In general terms, warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology has great potential for successful use in road works construction projects. However, concerns remain regarding the durability and behavior of WMA mixtures in the long term, which need to be addressed. This review focuses on the technical, economic and environmental advantages and disadvantages. The review concludes that the main advantageof this technology, at the moment, concerns the environment. At the end of this work, the authors include certain recommend… Show more

“…In marketable uses in Europe, South Africa, Asia and the United States, sasobit has been mixed directly with the aggregate as melted liquid, through a dosing meter or solid prills (small pellets). Marshall tests executed on blends fashioned in this way signposted no variance in flow or stability values as associated to premixing with the binder [5].…”

“…To produce one tonne of HMA a general value of the energy used of 340 MJ was considered according to similar research made by Zaumanis et al [15]. Regarding the energy consumed for the production of WMA, the literature mentions a reduction of 10-30% compared to the HMA [3,15,42]. Thus, in this study it was considered a reduced value with 20% compared to the value considered for the HMA, i.e., 270 MJ for all technologies for obtaining WMA.…”

“…According to Sterling (2012), Silva, Oliveira & Ferreira (2010) and , the minimum reduction of the manufacturing temperature, with respect to traditional mixtures of asphalt concrete in the asphalt plant, should be of 28 ° C, 40 ° C and 25 ° C respectively to be called warm mix asphalt (WMA). This reduces the energy required for the manufacture of asphalt mixtures and polluting emissions into the atmosphere (You & Goh, 2008, Bonaquist, 2011, Mohammad et al 2015, helps reduce wear and tear of asphalt plants (Biro, Gandhi & Amirkhanian, 2009) and decreases the aging of asphalt (Ran et al, 2010;Rondón, Noguera & Reyes, 2015). Other advantages reported with the use of WMA are: a) they allow their extension and compaction in colder environments (Ran et al, 2010); b) can be used to produce mixtures where the viscosity of the asphalt binder needs to be decreased, for example in asphalt mixtures modified with elastomeric or plastomeric polymers (Liu, Cao & Fang, 2010, Habal & Singh, 2017, Singh et al, 2018 , recycled RAP type -Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Howard, Doyle & Cox, 2013;Zhao et al, 2015;Kim et al, 2017; or porous (Frigio et al, 2016); c) the WMA allow to be transported greater distances before being extended and compacted (Robjent & Dosh, 2009).…”

“…The WMA can be manufactured by modifying the asphalt or asphalt mix with an additive such as Cecabase, Rediset or Sasobit, among others. They can also be manufactured using asphalt emulsions or foaming asphalt (Zhu, Chen & Yin, 2017), either with a chemical additive or using special techniques such as WAM-Foam® (Rondón et al, 2015).…”
