Pharmaceutical three-dimensional (3D) printing is a modern fabrication process with the potential to create bespoke drug products of virtually any shape and size from a computer-aided design model. Selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing combines the benefits of high printing precision and capability, enabling the manufacture of medicines with unique engineering and functional properties. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art in SLS 3D printing, including the main principles underpinning this technology and highlights the diverse selection of materials and essential parameters that influence printing. The technical challenges and processing conditions are also considered in the context of their effects on the printed product.Finally, the pharmaceutical applications of SLS 3D printing are covered, providing an emphasis on the advantages the technology offers to drug product manufacturing and personalised medicine.

This work aims to briefly present the cutting edge of 3D printing innovation in healthcare. This technology is used for surgical planning, medical education, bioprinting of tissues, and medical equipment spare parts in fields like pharmacology, prosthetics, surgery, and regenerative medicine. A review of the last decade was made in the search engines of PubMed and Espacenet. Three authors reviewed titles, abstracts, and keywords separately to identify studies appropriate to the topic. After the initial examination, complete texts of identified relevant studies were obtained and classified according to the authors. Results were synthesized in a narrative literature review. The revision showed that 3D printing has become of common use in the healthcare system since it allows medical personnel to implement customized solutions for each patient, thus reducing the probability of a false diagnostic or treatment. Major applications among the advantages and disadvantages of 3D printing in healthcare were presented. Nowadays, the main challenge in 3D printing is the cost of the equipment and its manufacturing. In the future, the challenges in cost could be reduced, but processing requirements and limited materials may still need further work.

Recapitulation of multiscale structure–function properties of cells, cell‐secreted extracellular matrix, and 3D architecture of natural tissues is central to engineering biomimetic tissue substitutes. Toward achieving biomimicry, a variety of biofabrication processes have been developed, which can be broadly classified into five categories—fiber and fabric formation, additive manufacturing, surface modification, remote fields, and other notable processes—each with specific advantages and limitations. The majority of biofabrication literature has focused on using a single process at a time, which often limits the range of tissues that could be created with relevant features that span nano to macro scales. With multiscale biomimicry as the goal, development of hybrid biofabrication strategies that synergistically unite two or more processes to complement each other's strengths and limitations has been steadily increasing. This work discusses recent literature in this domain and attempts to equip the reader with the understanding of selecting appropriate processes that can harmonize toward creating engineered tissues with appropriate multiscale structure–function properties. Opportunities related to various hybridization schemes and a future outlook on scale‐up biofabrication have also been discussed.
