BACKGROUND
There is a rise in diabetes prevalence in India due to a combination of factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and a disturbed sleep cycle and genetics. It is very important to be aware and educated about the diabetic diet and the importance of physical exercise in order to reduce the complications caused by diabetes, which reduces mortality and morbidity.
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate awareness of role of Physiotherapy in lifestyle modification in Diabetes mellitus in rural area.
METHODS
The study was conducted in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were clinically diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes mellitus. The study population was composed of 163 individuals which were above the age group of 30 years, further subdivided into 2 groups: 31 – 50 and 51 – 70 years. The validated questionnaire provided through which the level of awareness about role physiotherapy in lifestyle modification of diabetes mellitus were determined.
RESULTS
A total of 163 participants participated in this study. In the male and female participants included 67.4% of male and 32.5% of female Diabetic subjects respectively. Age group between 31 to 70 years is included in this study. The result revealed that 65% of people with poor knowledge about the role of physiotherapy in lifestyle modification of Diabetes mellitus, while 32% people had fair knowledge. The result also showed that, only a 3% people with good knowledge about the roles of physiotherapy in lifestyle modification of Diabetes mellitus.
CONCLUSIONS
The study revealed that, there is superficial knowledge about the roles of physiotherapy in lifestyle modification of diabetes mellitus in rural area. A very small amount of people was however found to be more knowledgeable about the roles of physiotherapy in lifestyle modification of diabetes mellitus when compared to other people from rural area.
