A review on hydraulic fracturing of unconventional reservoir

Abstract: a b s t r a c tHydraulic fracturing is widely accepted and applied to improve the gas recovery in unconventional reservoirs. Unconventional reservoirs to be addressed here are with very low permeability, complicated geological settings and in-situ stress field etc. All of these make the hydraulic fracturing process a challenging task. In order to effectively and economically recover gas from such reservoirs, the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fracturing in the heterogeneous fractured/ porous media und… Show more

“…In not only powder and sintered products such as pharmaceutical compacts [21] but also well-known homogeneous brittle materials such as glasses [25], the variability of mechanical properties may be reduced by taking advantage of the porous texture without lowering the porosity, which is sometimes required for functions such as impact resistance and adsorption. It is also important to mention here modern energy technologies that either require porous components as in batteries [26] or resort to fracking in order to extract organic material by interaction with the porous texture of the rock [27].…”

“…Another important role of the fractures within the Wolfcamp Shale is that they are pre-existing planes of weakness and may reactivate during hydraulic fracturing to assist in production (Blanton, 1982;Gale et al, 2014;Taleghani and Olson, 2014;Li et al, 2015). However, there are several factors to take into account when determining if pre-existing fractures will assist the hydraulic fracturing process.…”

“…Several factors altered the importance of this technology which the affordability and the ubiquity use of recent innovation in the technological tools in the drilling and exploration industries especially in the well construction processes and the recovery of gas regarding the massive volume of natural gas sources worldwide. Thereby, this recent and harnessing technologies revolutionize the way petroleum industries drill oil and gas reservoirs along the coming decades [1][2][3][4][5][6]. However, reservoir characteristics and the wrong orientation in the design of the hydraulic fracturing operations make the fractures inefficient and they squander vast sums of money for operating the procedures.…”
