A Review on Measurement Methods for Machining Induced Residual Stress

Abstract: The chip formation in mechanical machining / cutting process involves thermal loading and mechanical loading in the form of large plastic deformations, high strain, strain rates and high temperatures in the cutting zone. These loadings usually induce plastic deformation in the form of residual stresses in the surface and sub-surface of the machined workpiece. Residual stress issue is essential to be studied in order to control the quality and fatigue life of a component or part produced by machining process. T… Show more

“…In selecting manufacturing process, there are several attributes that need to consider, which are material to be used, number of parts required, size and shape of the product to be produced, dimensional tolerances required, geometrical complexity and the machine used. Fail to select the suitable manufacturing method such as machining process can produce incorrect required dimension and induce damage such as residual stress (Saptaji et al, 2019).…”

“…As the future works, the proposed child seat design needs to be further evaluated. Study and investigation about, e.g., its fabrication process [16], stress analysis using numerical simulation to predict its failure condition [17], as well as the vibration mode characteristics to make sure of its comfortableness [18], will be conducted.…”

“…However, despite many advantages, the EDM process also induces residual stress that can be harmful to the machined components. Therefore, the residual stress needs to be considered and minimized [8].…”
