Introduction: Hancornia speciosa Gomes is a plant used in traditional Brazilian medicine. Its therapeutic activity can be explained by the presence of secondary metabolites. It is found in biomes such as the Amazon, Brazilian semiarid (caatinga), Atlantic forest and cerrado. The objective of this study was to review the literature, compiling information and identifying factors that influence its therapeutic activity as well as arousing interest in new studies. Methodology: The search included PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scielo, Medline and Google Scholar databases using the keywords “Hancornia speciosa Gomes”, “Natural Polymers”, “Mangaba”, “Magabeira”, “Chlorogenic acid”, “Rutin”, “Naringerin”, “Bornesitol”, “Hancornia Latex”, “Phytotherapy”, “Ethnopharmacology”, “Medicinal plants” and the relationship between them. The search was complemented by reading the referenced articles and updated until May 2022. Results: Due to its rich content of bioactive compounds, it may be a promising choice for nutraceuticals and therapeutics with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antihypertensive, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, dermo protective, osteogenic and angiogenic properties. Conclusion: From a scientific point of view, it is necessary to standardize dosages, evaluate the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and toxicology, especially regarding the use of latex with the potential presence of pathogens in its composition. Randomized clinical studies based on the knowledge and popular use of this plant should be carried out after preclinical studies to prove its efficacy and safety.

O uso de plantas medicinais tem demonstrado benefícios aos pacientes com Diabetes Mellitus do tipo 2 (DM2), incluindo a redução do estresse oxidativo, situação comum neste grupo. Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os parametros físico-quimicos e potencial antioxidante de duas plantas medicinais com alegações antidiabéticas da Amazônia. Foram estudadas a Syzygium cumini e Myrcia sphaerocarpa, conhecidas popularmente como Jambolão e Pedra Hume caá, respectivamente. Para este fim, foram coletadas 7 amostras de Syzygium cumini e Myrcia sphaerocarpa em casas de ervas medicinais do município de Belém-PA, as quais foram submetidas a análises de pH, ºBrix, acidez, densidade, umidade, cinzas, ácido ascórbico, flavonoides, antocianinas e atividade antioxidante. Os resultados físico-químicos e de compostos antioxidantes foram apresentados através da média, desvio padrão, mínimo e máximo. Quanto aos valores encontrados, para o pH foi de 5,12 e 5,8; ºBrix 0,21 e 0,1; acidez 0,45ml NaOH/ml e 0,27ml; densidade 1,0 mg/L e 1,0 mg/L; umidade 0,72% 0,78%; cinzas 5,38% e 6,04%; 0,88% e 0,99% de ácido ascórbico; flavonoides 8,43mg/100g e 9,07mg/100g; antocianinas 6,19mg/100g e 4,87mg/100g para Syzygium cumini e Myrcia sphaerocarpa respectivamente. A atividade antioxidante foi de 0,25 para Jambolão e 0,28 para Pedra Ume Caa. Conclui-se que o Jambolão possui valores superiores nas análises de acidez titulável e antocianinas e inferiores em termos dos demais parâmetros físico-químicos e compostos com atividade antioxidantes quando comparado a Pedra Ume Caa.

Objective: The present study was aimed at exploring the molecular mechanism underlying the action of ginseng in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) using network pharmacology. Methods: The main effective ginseng ingredients were obtained from the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP) database and screened for oral bioavailability (OB), as well as drug-like properties (DL). A platform of PD targets was established using GeneCards and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) databases, and then an “effective ingredient-target-disease” interaction network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.7.1 software. A STRING database was used to construct a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network, and the related protein interactions were analyzed. Finally, we performed functional analyses of core targets using the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Gene and Gene Encyclopedia (KEGG) pathway enrichment, and then conducted molecular docking of the effective ingredients with disease targets. Results: Ninety-seven effective ginseng ingredients and 168 potential targets of PD were identified in the present study. Network analysis showed that the targets were mainly involved in regulating cell metabolism, apoptosis, and other biological processes (BPs). Further, it was noted that the effects of the targets on treatment of PD involved regulation of several signaling pathways, such as mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), advanced glycation end products (AGE), and receptors of advanced glycation end products (RAGE). The results of molecular docking showed that the active ginseng ingredients bind well with the targets of MAPK3 and MAPK14. Conclusion: The main active compounds of ginseng in the treatment of PD may be ginsenosides, and the molecular mechanism may be related to key targets such as MAPK3, MAPK14, and EGFR. The MAPK and AGE-RAGE signaling pathways may also be involved.
