A review on shellfish polysaccharides: Extraction, characterization and amelioration of metabolic syndrome

Abstract: Shellfish are diverse, widely distributed organisms that are a rich source of biological resources. Polysaccharides are an important components in shellfish, hence a great deal of attention has been directed at isolation and characterization of shellfish polysaccharides because of their numerous health benefits. Differences in shellfish species, habits, and environment result in the diversity of the structure and composition of polysaccharides. Thus, shellfish polysaccharides possess special biological activit… Show more

“…Moreover, monosaccharides can also give the food a sweet taste, making the food taste better [67][68][69]. Therefore, the type and content of monosaccharides are also one of the important indicators to evaluate the nutritional or medical value of the commercial traits of shellfish [70][71][72][73]. In this study, a total of eight kinds of monosaccharides were detected in the pleopods of the whelk, more than in Bullacta exarata (6) [74], H. discus hannai (4) [75], and N. didyma (6) [76].…”

“…In recent years, investigations on the bioactivities of animal polysaccharides have been emerging, and the following have been unearthed: hypoglycemic [ 73 ], hypolipidemic [ 74 ], anticoagulant [ 75 ], antiviral [ 76 ], and immunoregulatory activities ( Figure 2 ). Within the life sciences field, we are committed to finding natural products with excellent biodegradability and compatibility, and polysaccharides are one of the representative substances [ 1 ].…”

“…Shellfish synthesize and accumulate numerous structurally novel and functionally unique active substances, such as polysaccharide compounds. [ 10 ] Compared to polysaccharides found in terrestrial plants and animals, those in shellfish generally exhibit higher solubility, thus facilitating the development of formulations. [ 11 ] Shellfish products rich in acidic polysaccharides have been shown to exhibit various biological activities such as liver protection, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, anti‐inflammatory, anticoagulant, antitumor, and antioxidant effects.…”
