A review on systematic reviews of health information system studies

Abstract: The purpose of this review is to consolidate existing evidence from published systematic reviews on health information system (HIS) evaluation studies to inform HIS practice and research. Fifty reviews published during 1994-2008 were selected for meta-level synthesis. These reviews covered five areas: medication management, preventive care, health conditions, data quality, and care process/outcome. “…Plusieurs autres pays ont adopté des orientations technologiques favorisant le déploiement d'un dossier santé électronique permettant aux cliniciens des hôpitaux de travailler plus efficacement. “…Common anticipated benefits include increased care quality, patient safety and process efficiency as a result of better access to realtime and accurate patient data. The reality has yet to reach this state and over one decade (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014) of literature reviews report mixed findings including attitude of nurses toward adopting technology solutions and impacts of technology adoption in healthcare (Häyrinen et al, 2008;Lau et al, 2010;Meijden et al, 2003;Mills et al, 2013;Nguyen et al, 2014). Mixed findings are still found in recent research (Lin et al, 2016;Tilahun & Fritz, 2015).…”

“…Over the years, on-going research reports mixed and inconclusive results in regard to impacts of HIS implementation and its assimilation to clinicians' practice and workflow (Lau et al, 2010;Mills et al, 2013;Nguyen et al, 2014). Industry surveys conducted by the American College of Physicians and American EHR Partners (2013) reveal an overall dissatisfaction of the clinician users.…”

“…4 While success is not guaranteed, a range of studies demonstrate that, under the right conditions, health ICT can contribute to these objectives, driving improvements in timely communication, quality, and efficiency. 5 There is a large body of literature on the experiences of specific organizations and providers in implementing electronic health records (EHRs) and other related applications such as e-prescribing and computerized physician order entry systems. [6][7][8][9] ICTs can also enable new ways of delivering care.…”
