A review on the mechanical behaviour of curvilinear fibre composite laminated panels

Abstract: A review on works that investigate the mechanical behaviour of variable stiffness composite laminated panels is carried out in this paper. The review mostly focuses on buckling, failure and vibrations in laminates reinforced by curvilinear fibres, although other issues related to variable stiffness laminates are also addressed. The peculiarities in the formulation of curvilinear fibre reinforced plates are briefly described. As an illustration, the natural frequencies of vibration of variable stiffness composi… Show more

“…Various analyses have been performed to study the structural behaviour of VSCL [4], of which we recall investigations devoted to analyse vibrations of VSCL plates. Classic Laminated Theory (CLT) was applied to study the vibration of VSCL plates in [5][6][7].…”

“…As the stiffness of the lamina depends on the fiber orientation , a varying fiber orientation leads to new possibilities in optimizing directional stiffness requirement. The design aspects and properties of variable stiffness composites are comparatively different and found to be more efficient [5,6,7] as compared to conventional Constant Stiffness Composite Laminas(CSCL), especially in improving the buckling strength of the laminas. The recent advances in manufacturing technologies have made it possible to produce VSCL components.…”

“…These manufacturing capabilities allow to implement new composite laminated designs, which have as distinctive feature the fact that the stress-strain constitutive relation is not constant in space. This type of composites belongs to a group of Variable Stiffness Composite Laminates (there are other ways of achieving VSCL, as varying the number of plies or the fibre volume fraction [3], but these are not considered here).…”
