A Review on the Modelling of Wave-Structure Interactions Based on OpenFOAM

Abstract: The modelling of wave-structure interaction (WSI) has significant applications in understanding natural processes as well as securing the safety and efficiency of marine engineering. Based on the technique of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the open-source simulation framework - OpenFOAM, this paper provides a state-of-the-art review of WSI modelling methods. The review categorises WSI scenarios and suggests their suitable computational approaches, concerning a rigid, deformable or porous structure in r… Show more

“…Figure 2 illustrates the change from stable to unstable solver behaviour when the body becomes lighter than the surrounding fluid in the case of a circular body accelerating in a fluid due to gravity. The simulations were run with OpenFOAM’s solver for the fluid motion [8] and the module [30] for body motion. Both the converging and diverging solution in figure 2 exhibit an alternating overshoot, where the alternation is caused by the factor false( - 1 false) k in equation (2.4).…”

“…The numerical tank is generated using OpenFOAM (see Figure 1) utilising the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The interFOAM solver which is capable of solving the VOF (Volume of Fluid) equations [20] is utilised. Waves are generated using the waves2foam library [21].…”

“…Within the domain of interest (1 <𝑥 𝜆 ⁄ < 3), water surface elevation, pressure and velocity components are sampled at 7 different water columns which are located within 2 m distance intervals (a third of the wavelength). Such setup is designed based on the experience and recommendations [20].…”
