A review on the porous geopolymer preparation for structural and functional materials applications

Abstract: Geopolymer (also called inorganic polymers) is a kind of amorphous gel material with a 3D structure consisting of SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. It has drawn international attention due to its environmental friendliness and excellent performance. This review covers raw materials, preparation methods, and applications of porous geopolymer materials with micropore, mesopore, or macropore. The preparation methods can be divided into five categories: (i) self‐forming method, (ii) direct foaming method, (iii) adding fil… Show more

“…In recent years, foamed materials have gained increased attention in water remediation due to their high thermal stability and porous structure [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Numerous studied focused on utilizing alkali-activated foamed materials for the removal of contaminants from water [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Foamed materials produced from alkali-activated fly ash [ 26 ], volcanic tuffs [ 27 ], and hypergolic coal gangue were utilized in the removal of water contaminants.…”

“…2. Incorporation of the foaming agent into a paste (in this case geopolymers called foamed or aerated geopolymers) regards the best method for the manufacture of lightweight geopolymers [7,[20][21][22]. Some techniques, such as mechanical, chemical, thermal, and irradiation approaches, can produce foamed geopolymers.…”

“…Thus, they have a guiding significance for the resource utilization of solid waste in wastewater treatment. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Recently, solid wastes containing high content of aluminum and silicon (fly ash, steel slag, and so forth) are reported to be applied to be used as raw materials for the synthesis of geopolymers. 11,12 Fly ash mainly comes from thermal power plants or urban heating boilers.…”
