A review on visual privacy preservation techniques for active and assisted living

Abstract: This paper reviews the state of the art in visual privacy protection techniques, with particular attention paid to techniques applicable to the field of Active and Assisted Living (AAL). A novel taxonomy with which state-of-the-art visual privacy protection methods can be classified is introduced. Perceptual obfuscation methods, a category in this taxonomy, is highlighted. These are a category of visual privacy preservation techniques, particularly relevant when considering scenarios that come under video-base… Show more

“…On the other hand, some fire detection models have been implemented in actual industries, although the welding spark detection system has not been fully tested and demonstrated in actual construction because it is still in the exploratory phase of study. Prior to implementing the proposed welding spark detection model at a construction site, it may be necessary to integrate video privacy models, such as facial or body deidentification in images [ 58 , 59 ] to ensure compliance with privacy regulations. Additionally, it is important to consider potential issues such as detection errors and biased data.…”

“…When exposed to cameras during capture, these artifacts increase the likelihood of the subject being erroneously identified, effectively enhancing the odds of misidentification. This and many more approaches related to visual privacy preservation are thoroughly reviewed by Ravi & Climent-Pérez (2023).…”

“…It is worth noting that when ambient intelligence comes into play, privacy becomes an issue not only for patients and parents but also for clinicians and caregivers. Addressing this issue at the technical level requires the adoption of privacypreservation approaches such as those based on privacy-preserving visual sensors (e.g., depth or thermal sensors) or those based on ad hoc techniques able to ensure context-aware visual privacy and retain all the information contained in RGB cameras [166]. This may help reduce the feeling of intrusion in parents and caregivers.…”
