A revision of the Scapholeberinae (Crustacea: Cladocera)

Abstract: The group of hyponeustonic daphniid cladocera previously known under the generic name Scapholeberis is raised to the rank of a subfamily (Scapholeberinae) and contains two genera, Megafenestra n.gen. (2 species), and Scapholeberis s.s. (7 species and one subspecies). The characters upon which this revision is based are: structure of the rostrum, structure of the first antennae, structure of trunk limbs 1, 2, and 5, presence and nature of headpore(s), structure of the ventral rim of the valves, armature of the … Show more

“…The cladoceran Bosmina and the calanoid copepods were essentially encountered in seston, whereas the cladocerans Chydorus and more particularly Scapholeberis were the dominant species in neuston. Morphological characteristics of Scapholeberis, with its modified ventral rim of valves, allow the animals to hang upside down at the underside of the surface film of the water (Dumont and Pensaert 1983). In addition, their high melanin pigment content protects them against high ultraviolet radiation at the water-air interface (Kerfoot 1982).…”

“…Rotifer identification was based on Koste (1978), Segers (1995), De Smet (1996) and Nogrady and Segers (2002). Crustaceans, with the exception of juvenile copepods, were identified to the level of genus or species based on Ringuelet (1958), Olivier (1962), Paggi (1978Paggi ( , 1994, Dumont and Pensaert (1983), Reid (1985), Bayly (1992), Smirnov (1996), Sinev (2001Sinev ( , 2004, Benzi (2005) among others.…”
