A Rigorous Composite-IPR Model for Multilateral Wells

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractUse of multilateral wells for oil and gas production has gained strong momentum in the past five years. However, most of the wells do not deliver hydrocarbon fluids at expected flow rates. One of the reasons is that the well planners over-estimate the productivity of wells using inaccurate methods for predicting composite IPRs of well laterals. A more accurate method for predicting composite IPR of multilateral wells is highly desirable. This paper fills the … Show more

“…With the advent of new technology, multilateral or multibranched wells are also being drilled. Fluid flow behavior into these nonvertical wells has been also investigated and IPR equations have been presented by several authors (Bendakhlia and Aziz, 1989;Cheng, 1990;Kabir, 1992;Chang, 1992;Raghavan and Joshi, 1993;Huang et al, 1998;Retnanto and Economides, 1996;Kamkom and Zhu, 2005;Yildiz, 2005;Guo et al, 2006). Qasem (1996) presented a detailed study of IPR for naturally fractured reservoirs.…”

“…The effects of pressure losses in the horizontal wellbore on the productivity of oil wells have been documented in a number of papers including Dikken (1990), Ozkan et al (1999), Hill and Zhu (2006), Guo et al (2006), and Guo et al (2007). According to the study of Hill and Zhu (2006), the frictional pressure drop along a 5,000 ft long, 4-in.…”

“…IPR curves were also used during enhanced oil recovery process where Yeu et al [23] in 1997 used IPR to predict the performance of an oil well under the implementation of polymer flooding. After emerging of the multi-lateral technology, Guo et al [24] in 2006 derived composite IPR for multi-lateral wells. These are few of the many applications of IPR in oil industry.…”
