This review examines the complex landscape of photovoltaic (PV) module recycling and outlines the challenges hindering widespread adoption and efficiency. Technological complexities resulting from different module compositions, different recycling processes and economic hurdles are significant barriers. Inadequate infrastructure, regulatory gaps and limited awareness are also hampering progress. In addition, this analysis draws parallels between the development of PV module recycling and recycling technologies for other high-tech products, such as lithium-ion batteries, highlighting similarities in regulatory and technical feasibility challenges. Amid these challenges, however, lie opportunities for a sustainable future. Technological advances, stakeholder collaboration and the adoption of circular economy principles emerge as key ways forward. This review highlights the need for concerted action to overcome barriers and drive the development of efficient and sustainable PV module recycling practices.

The development of tandem photovoltaics and photoelectrochemical solar cells requires new absorber materials with bandgaps in the range of ≈1.5–2.3 eV, for use in the top cell paired with a narrower‐gap bottom cell. An outstanding challenge is finding materials with suitable optoelectronic and defect properties, good operational stability, and synthesis conditions that preserve underlying device layers. This study demonstrates the Zintl phosphide compound CaZn2P2 as a compelling candidate semiconductor for these applications. Phase‐pure, ≈500 nm‐thick CaZn2P2 thin films are prepared using a scalable reactive sputter deposition process at growth temperatures as low as 100 °C, which is desirable for device integration. Ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy shows that CaZn2P2 films exhibit an optical absorptivity of ≈104 cm−1 at ≈1.95 eV direct bandgap. Room‐temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements show near‐band‐edge optical emission, and time‐resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) measurements indicate a photoexcited carrier lifetime of ≈30 ns. CaZn2P2 is highly stable in both ambient conditions and moisture, as evidenced by PL and TRMC measurements. Experimental data are supported by first‐principles calculations, which indicate the absence of low‐formation‐energy, deep intrinsic defects. Overall, this study shall motivate future work integrating this potential top cell absorber material into tandem solar cells.

Interconnection layers (ICLs) serve as critical components in monolithic perovskite‐based tandem solar cells (Pe‐TSCs), determining the series connection between the top and bottom sub‐cells. ICLs have garnered considerable attention, with numerous studies focusing on their experimental effects. However, their operational mechanism and overall impact on Pe‐TSCs remain underexplored. This review elucidates the structure and functionality of ICLs, distinguishing the working mechanisms between Pe‐TSCs and traditional multijunction solar cells. The carrier injection balance around ICLs and its impact on the tandem device performance is delved into. The discussion also encompasses current advancements of ICLs within Pe‐TSCs, and focuses on the uniqueness of ICLs in Pe‐TSCs and evaluation methods. Finally, the requirements of ICLs in Pe‐TSCs are proposed, and provide cogitations about the potential designs and stability of ICLs. This review not only deepens the physical understanding of ICLs but also broadens the research scope in tandem photovoltaics.
