A robust network DEA model for sustainability assessment: an application to Chinese Provinces

Abstract: This paper constructs an Environmental Sustainability index in order to investigate regional efficiency in China between 2000 and 2012. The Environmental Sustainability index consists of a Production Efficiency index and an Eco-efficiency index. A multiplicative relational network data envelopment analysis model is applied, and a window analysis is conducted to capture the efficiency trends over time. The results reveal significant heterogeneity among Chinese provinces for the Environmental Sustainability and … Show more

“…The concept of environmental efficiency encompasses both economic and environmental aspects (Mardani et al, 2017;Chen et al, 2020). The worsening energy consumption and environmental pollution problems force scholars and practitioners to pay attention to environmental efficiency, the improvement of which is one of the most cost-effective ways to conserve energy and reduce pollution emission and finally achieve sustainable development (Zha et al, 2016;Sueyoshi et al, 2017).…”

“…Researchers from across the world have studied methods by which we can reconcile the relationship between the economy, society, and the environment to achieve sustainable development of the regional economy. For example, Chen et al constructed an environmental sustainability index and studied China's regional efficiency from 2000 to 2012 [6]. They used the data envelopment analysis model of the multiplicative relation network to analyze the variation trend of acquisition efficiency over time, revealing that overall, environmental sustainability has enormous potential for improvement.…”

“…Bai et al (2019) also show that there is a positive influence of government research and development (R&D) funding on green innovation efficiency of the energy‐intensive industries. In this scenario, eco‐efficiency is the key concept to assess the trade‐offs between maximized energy productions and minimized environmental influence (Chen et al, 2020).…”
