A role for macrophage scavenger receptors in atherosclerosis and susceptibility to infection

Abstract: Macrophage type-I and type-II class-A scavenger receptors (MSR-A) are implicated in the pathological deposition of cholesterol during atherogenesis as a result of receptor-mediated uptake of modified low-density lipoproteins (mLDL). MSR-A can bind an extraordinarily wide range of ligands, including bacterial pathogens, and also mediates cation-independent macrophage adhesion in vitro. Here we show that targeted disruption of the MSR-A gene in mice results in a reduction in the size of atherosclerotic lesions i… Show more

“…40 Upregulation of ICAM-1 in cultured human and rabbit arterial endothelial cells has been shown to occur after lysophosphatidylcholine treatment. 41 Moreover, lysophosphatidylcholine induced the expression of ICAM-1 on endothelium derived from human iliac arteries but not from Values are meanϮSEM (n) and express ratio (%) of lesion area to media area (measured in 2 ). P values are shown for ApoE Ϫ/Ϫ (SKO) and ApoE Ϫ/Ϫ /ICAM-1 Ϫ/Ϫ (DKO) mice fed a chow or fat diet from 0 to 20 weeks.…”
