The most important performance indicator of a fertilizer metering mechanism is the evenness of fertilizer flow. In this study, a regression mathematical model between the key operating parameters of the fluted roller meter and the flow evenness was developed to simulate a fluted-roller meter for metering diammonium phosphate fertilizer using the discrete element method (DEM). The model was verified by bench test using the same equipment and parameters as the DEM model. Selected working parameters of the fluted-roller meter, including roll length (L), roll rotational speed (n), and flap angle (α) (for fertilizer discharge control), were optimized to maximize the flow evenness. Flow evenness was assessed by the coefficient of variation (CV) of the discharging mass during the operation. The simulation and experiment results showed the similar trends, in terms of effects of machine parameters on the CV. The relative errors ranged from 0.2% to 34.6% with a mean of 10.5%. This demonstrated that the DEM model was feasible to simulate the metering process of the fluted-roller meter. The machine parameters that significantly affected the values of CV in descending order were α, L and n. Both simulation and measurement results revealed that the optimal machine parameters, represented by the minimum value of CV, were observed at L = 45 mm, n = 55 r/min and α = 22.5°. This combination of parameters returned CV values of 10.89% and 9.55% for simulations and measurements, respectively. The study provided useful information for guiding the design and selection of machine parameters for metering devices for fertilizer applications.

Studded feed rollers are widely used in seed metering units of seed drills. The flow evenness is an important indicator of the performance of studded feed rollers. With this research, the effects of studded feed rollers with different stud numbers (27, 36, and 45 studs) on flow evenness were investigated both in the laboratory and by simulation in case of using different ground speeds (1.5, 2, and 2.5 m⋅s -1 ). While the experiments were carried out on the seed drill model prepared in the laboratory, the simulation was done with the Rocky DEM software program. In the laboratory and simulation studies, it was determined that the flow evenness increased with the increase in the number of studs and the ground speed. The results obtained from the laboratory and simulation studies show parallelism with each other. However, it was seen that the results obtained in the laboratory were slightly higher than the results obtained from the simulation. With this study, it has been seen that it would be very beneficial to use the DEM model to improve the performance of the seed metering unit and to develop a new seed metering unit.

Based on the mechanical and physical properties study of forage grass seeds, multi-line with one-device type metering device was designed. It was composed of adjustable screw, stirrer, metering device housing and central metering sheave and so on. The sowing rate can be set by turning the screw to change the working length of the central metering sheave relative to the metering device housing. The stirrer inside of the sheave housing is used to prevent seeds overhead. And metering of different sizes of seed is adjusted by changing the position of internal components of the slot wheel mechanism. Innovative design on the structure of the central metering sheave was finished. According to the structure parameters and physical characteristic parameters, different seed sowing rate of per hectares was calculated. And then the working length scale of the central metering groove wheel was made. And there is a one-to-one correspondence between scale values and sowing quantity per hectare of different kinds of seed.
