A rolling horizon simulation approach for managing demand with lead time variability

Abstract: This paper proposes a rolling horizon (RH) approach to deal with management problems under dynamic demand in planning horizons with variable lead times using system dynamics (SD) simulation. Thus, the nature of dynamic RH solutions entails no inconveniences to contemplate planning horizons with unpredictable demands. This is mainly because information is periodically updated and replanning is done in time. Therefore, inventory and logistic costs may be lower. For the first time, an RH is applied for demand man… Show more

“…Also, future research could focus on proposing solutions for challenges/barriers caused by agriculture 4.0/industry 4.0 adoption in the SMEs background. Appling novelty models on self-optimizing agricultural supply chain structures [62,63] in terms of cost of distribution and improving demand management, both contemplated within variable lead times scenarios (which may affect product obsolescence), could be a relevant research field. In this sense, a proposal and validation in a real world agri-food supply chain (where disruptions that most affect perishable products) related to crop diversification is a forthcoming work.…”

“…Campuzano et al [85] research a system dynamics simulation in a single-echelon SC with variable deadlines, uncertain demand, and a rolling horizon (RH) updating information and plans, reducing inventory and logistic costs. Lot-sizing, variable lead times, and RH hence the performance, using logistic costs, SL, and the BWE as metrics.…”
