A rough set based algorithm for updating the modes in categorical clustering

Abstract: The categorical clustering problem has attracted much attention especially in the last decades since many real world applications produce categorical data. The k-mode algorithm, proposed since 1998, and its multiple variants were widely used in this context. However, they suffer from a great limitation related to the update of the modes in each iteration. The mode in the last step of these algorithms is randomly selected although it is possible to identify many candidate ones. In this paper, a rough density mo… Show more

“…Similar to J. Y. Liang, R. J. Kuo has conducted studies on metaheuristic-based clustering in collaboration with T. P. Q. Nguyen [2,[53][54][55]60,69]. Other authors, such as S. Salem, S. Naouali, and Z. Chtourou, have also worked on rough-set clustering [64,[70][71][72]. Furthermore, Y. M. Cheung, as the second author, has proposed numerous methods related to distance metrics with Y. “…Another algorithm, known as the density rough K-modes (DRk-M) algorithm [70][71][72], has been proposed to address the issue of random selection during the update of modes in the K-Modes algorithm. The DRk-M algorithm calculates the density of the modes and subsequently applies RST to select the most suitable modes based on the concepts of lower and upper approximations in RST.…”

“…However, in the teaching evaluation of loose-leaf textbooks, there is a certain correlation between different attributes, and the K-modes algorithm needs to be optimised. The study introduces the sum of error squares to determine the number of clustering families, as shown in equation (5).…”

“…How to determine the weights of different indicators to comprehensively evaluate the use of loose-leaf textbooks is also a complex issue. Moreover, in the multidimensional evaluation of the use of loose-leaf textbooks, it is necessary to take into account the student feedback, teacher feedback and other subjective factors, which are often fuzzy, and need to be converted to data that can be calculated by the system through technical means in the multidimensional evaluation [5] . The K-modes algorithm is a clustering algorithm for discrete data, which can be used to classify the data of students or textbooks or teachers into different categories.…”

“…Rough set theory, proposed by Z. Pawlak in 1982, is a new mathematical tool to deal with quantitative uncertainty, vagueness, and imprecision information 1,2 . It also has the ability of deduction, 3 reduction, 4 and common sense reasoning 5,6 . In the past decades, rough set theory has been widely applied in the fields of machine learning, knowledge acquisition, decision analysis, knowledge discovery in databases, expert system, and pattern recognition 7 …”
