A safety assessment ofCoriolus versicolorbiomass as a food supplement

Abstract: BackgroundCoriolus versicolor (CV) is a common mushroom with antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory properties. The existence of these properties has been extensively proven mainly using CV extract; research on the biomass form is scarce.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the safety of the CV biomass form, as it is commonly used as a food supplement.DesignCV biomass powder was dissolved in distilled water and administered daily (2.5, 5.0, and 7.… Show more

“…Additionally, CV contains immunonutrients proteoglycans (eg. polysaccharopeptide Krestin - PSK), which have antioxidant properties [ 16 ]. Although the impact of these compounds was never tested in neurogenesis, we may argue that the positive effect of CV seen herein may be the result of the synergistic action of β-glucans, proteoglycans, furfurals and the phenolic compounds 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol and 2,6-dimetoxy-4-vinylphenol.…”

“…Unlike the extract form, originated from concentrated extracts of the fruiting bodies, the biomass comprises mycelia and primordia, which renders it more resistant to proteolytic enzymes of the digestive tract [ 15 ]. Due to its enrichment in enzymes with immune-enhancing activity and other substances including β-glucans, which are likely to act in a synergistic manner, CV biomass is seemingly more effective in promoting the detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus preventing oxidative stress, when compared with CV extracts [ 16 ]. Recently, CV biomass administration was shown to promote an up-regulation of lipoxin A4 (an anti-inflammatory mediator) and an increase in the levels of redox-sensitive proteins involved in the cellular stress response, such as Hsp72, heme oxygenase-1 and thioredoxin, in several brain areas, namely the cortex and the hippocampus [ 17 ].…”

“…The application of registered trade mark technologies does not increase the total amount of Aspergillus in the environment, but shifts the profile from toxigenic to atoxigenic strains. A single application is effective for several, maintaining this efficacy since the field until store and thus, protecting maize/groundnut along the entire value chain (from field to fork) [54].…”

Основні біоактивні компоненти екстрактів із біомаси T. versicolor, яким приділяють увагу в більшості досліджень,це полісахариди (Chu et al, 2002;Cui and Chisti, 2003;Rowan et al, 2003;Arteiro et al, 2012;Barros et al, 2016).
