A Satellite Multiple-Beam Antenna for High-Rate Data Relays

Abstract: Abstract-This paper describes the concept and the development of key components of a novel multiple-beam antenna for satellite applications. The antenna is designed to be used in a transparent high-rate data relay system that links several low earth orbit (LEO) satellites to a single ground station via a satellite positioned on a geostationary orbit (GEO). The proposed antenna is based on the concept of an array-fed reflector. The antenna can track LEO satellites by switching between different subarrays of a b… Show more

“…In this work, we give only a short description of the system concept. Detailed information including implementation requirements and performance analysis was already published in Greda et al Figure shows the general idea of the GEO data relay. In this figure, 3 LEO satellites send signals towards a single GEO satellite at the same time, using small steerable reflector antennas.…”

“…Frequency division multiple access is used to avoid interference between the signals. The target system shall provide 25 channels in the intersatellite link band around 26 GHz with 36 MHz bandwidth each and a spacing of 40 MHz between channels . The channel spacing is enough to tolerate any occurring Doppler shifts, as they will be below 750 kHz.…”
