This article proposes an Internet of Things–based smart home system composed of a virtualized cloud server and a mobile phone app. The smart Internet of Things–based system includes a sensing network, which is developed with the ZigBee wireless communication protocol, a message queuing telemetry transport, a virtualized cloud server and a mobile phone app. A Raspberry Pi development board is used to receive packet information from the terminal sensors using ZigBee wireless communication. Then, the message queuing telemetry transport broker not only completes transmission of the message but also publishes it to the virtualized cloud server. The transmission can then be viewed through the website using a mobile phone. The designed app combines the application of the virtualized cloud server, client sensors and the database. Verification experiments revealed the measured average response time and throughput of approximately 4.0 s and 6069 requests per second, respectively, for the virtualized web server and approximately 0.144 s and 8866 packets per second, respectively, for the message queuing telemetry transport broker. The designed functions of the mobile phone app are a global positioning system home monitoring, family memo, medical care and near-field communication key. Both interlinkage and handler methods are proposed to facilitate a powerful function without delay in displaying information. The proposed system integrates with software and hardware to complete the data analysis and information management quickly and correctly. It can cater to user needs with superior ease and convenience.

The vast majority of home automation systems depend on a permanent central controller and this is the source of many serious problems. The controller may be eliminated by using one or more Intermittent Control Devices such as a smartphone, but the responsibilities of the controller must be redistributed. This paper considers the problem of keeping multiple intermittent controllers up-to-date with status information for devices around the home. Four protocols are proposed, taking key lessons from existing network protocols, and then implemented, tested and compared with the expected performance of UPnP. All four protocols outperform UPnP and further analysis shows that these protocols can be implemented in a robust and user-friendly manner. A comparison of the packet efficiency of these protocols demonstrates that the combination of device registration and packet broadcasting makes for the most efficient protocol and should form the basis of devices status communications in home automation systems without a permanent central controller.

This study proposed the Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring platform model to manage multiple Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) broker server. The Broker is a part of the MQTT protocol system to deliver the message from publisher to subscriber. The single MQTT protocol that setup in a server just have one broker system. However, many users used more than one broker to develop their system. One of the problems with the user that use more than one MQTT broker to develop their system is no recording system that helps users to record configurations from multi brokers and connected devices. This can cause to slow the deployment process of the device because the configuration of the device and broker not properly managed. The platform built is expected to solve the problem. This proposed platform can manage multiple MQTT broker server and device configuration from different product or vendor. The platform also can manage the topic that connects to a registered broker on the platform. The other advantages of this platform are open source and can modify to a specific business process. After usability testing and response time testing, the proposed platform can manage multiple MQTT broker server, functional to use, and an average of response time from the platform page is not more than 10 seconds.
