A Scalable Ka-Band 1024-Element Transmit Dual-Circularly-Polarized Planar Phased Array for SATCOM Application

Abstract: This paper presents a scalable 1024-element transmit dual-circularly-polarized phased array for Ka-band satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal applications. The transmit array based on the CMOS beamformer and a multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) can steer up to large scan angles (±60°) with a scan loss less than 4.5 dB. With the 8-channel transmit beamformer, the array can realize dual circular polarization and the axial ratio (AR) of the array is less than 3 dB in the scanning range of ±30° in both lef… Show more

“…2). Depending on where the analog beamformer (ABF) is implemented in the system, a distinction is generally made between radio frequency (RF) [62], [63], [64], [65], [66], local oscillator (LO) [49], [67], [68], intermediate frequency (IF)/baseband (BB) [69], [70], [71], [72], [73], [74] beamforming. Towards increasingly larger phased array systems, the complexity and scalability of the integrated circuits is becoming a major design aspect [44].…”

“…From a pure performance perspective, OTS is a good candidate as a clocking platform for large arrays, for example, as a complement to a local LFTS scheme. 4 While electrical references are utilized in mid-size arrays [48], [49], larger implementations (>40 k elements), for example, [50], may benefit from an optical reference clock. The strongest competitor to OTS in sparse applications is a low-frequency reference that is distributed using RFTS methods.…”

“…In this context, phased arrays [1], [2] are an attractive solution compared to more standard mechanically-steerable antennas; but they lead to relatively complex, expensive, and power consuming systems.…”
