A Scalable Three-Step Approach for Demand Side Management of Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Abstract: In this paper, we present a scalable approach for DSM (demand side management) of PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles). Essentially, our approach consists of three steps: aggregation, optimization, and control. In the aggregation step, individual PHEV charging constraints are aggregated upwards in a tree structure. In the optimization step, the aggregated constraints are used for scalable computation of a collective charging plan, which minimizes costs for electricity supply. In the real-time control step,… Show more

“…Another three step approach is used in the Intelligator [155], in which power and energy constraints by the devices are communicated to a central entity. There, the constraints are aggregated and the flexibility is optimized for future time intervals.…”

“…Claessen et al [23] use a generic way of specifying flexibility in their model to compare the performance of the TRIANA methodology [108] and the Intelligator methodology [155]. The general structure of the dataset satisfies the requirements and the research results show that such a dataset can be used by multiple DEM methodologies if it is structured well.…”

“…Therefore, these entities can help retailers to optimize their procurement costs. PHEV aggregators are one of the new market players which coordinate DR programs for PHEVs as special demands [44]. The main aim of PHEV aggregators is to enhance the power system stability and increase the social welfare through reducing electricity price.…”

“…Distribution System Operators (DSO) need to have access to flexibility services in order to reduce their investment needs. The literature contains many papers showing the benefits of using such flexibility in distribution networks [1][2][3][4] and the methods to deliver this flexibility [5][6][7][8]. However, few studies have been performed on the way that the flexibility in distribution network can be exchanged as a commodity in an unbundled electric system.…”
