A Scoping Review of Non-invasive Imaging Modalities in Dermatological Disease: Potential Novel Biomarkers in Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Abstract: Background: The development of imaging-based biomarkers has the potential to overcome major challenges in the accurate and reproducible assessment of disease severity and response to novel therapies in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). Understanding the advantages and limitations of existing non-invasive imaging modalities in dermatological disease will aid in the development of hypotheses and inform the design of future studies. Methods: A scoping review was performed using Medline, Embase, Web of Science Databas… Show more

“…A growing body of evidence suggests a pivotal role of follicular units in the early phases of HS [13][14][15][16]. In the present study, we described confocal morphological features of open comedos and ultrastructural differences of follicular ostia between HS and healthy skin.…”

“…In case of clinically ambiguous presentation, non-invasive imaging techniques can visualize characteristic morphological features that can supplement clinical assessments to help avoid biopsies and tailor treatment plans. 6,7 Despite the growing clinical awareness of the nail unit's relevance for the management of psoriatic conditions and rising interest in the visualization of its clinically and subclinically affected subcomponents, a panoramic overview of available noninvasive techniques and a unified terminology for the description of psoriatic features are lacking.…”
