The reaction of diphenyltin dichloride with enantiopure Grignard reagents prepared in situ leads to diphenyltin chlorides 7a-e, which contain chiral organyl substituents. The 2-bornyl derivative 7a forms a mixture of exo and endo isomers and the (-)-menthyl derivative 7b yields a mixture of epimers, whereas the cis-and trans-myrtanyl complexes 7c and 7d and the m-(2-bornyl-2-ene)phenyl species 7e form only one enantiomer as the tin atom is separated from the next stereogenic centre by a methylene or m-phenylene group. The target chirally modified 1-(triorganylstannyl)-1,2,4-triphospholes 2a-e are accessible from 7a-e by treatment of the latter with the salt (3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2,4-triphospholyl)-sodium (Na5) in good yield. As for 7c-e, complexes 2c-e exhibit enantiopure organyl tin substituents that combine with the planar chiral 1,2,4-triphosphole moiety to form diastereomers. “…The Mg-P (2.6224(7) Å ) and Mg-C (mean: 2.484 Å ) distances in that compound are markedly shorter than those in 1, again most probably because of the lesser steric bulk of its phosphorus heterocycle. The only other structurally characterized magnesium complex incorporating a phospholyl anion is [(THF) 3 Mg(l-Cl) 3 Mg(THF) 3 ][1,2,4-P 3 C 2 Bu 2 t ] [10], though this is a salt with a free triphospholyl anion that has no interaction with either Mg centre. We are currently exploring the use of 1 as a reagent for the transfer of its diphospholyl anion to less electropositive metals.…”

The reaction of the diphospholyl anion, [1,3-P 2 C 3 Bu 3 t ] -(generated by reaction of the phosphaalkyne, P:CBu t , with sodium metal) with MgCl 2 has afforded the dimeric diphospholyl magnesium(II) chloride complex, [{Mg(g 5 -1,3-P 2 C 3 Bu 3 t )(THF)(l-Cl)} 2 ] 1. The cell parameters of compound 1Á(hexane) are: P-1, a = 10.792 (2) Å , b = 10.969(2) Å , c = 12.484(3) Å ; a = 64.38(3)°, b = 68.96(3)°, c = 83.10(3)°. The compound represents the first structurally characterized example of a group 2 metal diphospholyl.

The missing member [Cp′′2Zr(η2‐P3CtBu)] (Cp′′=η5‐C5H3tBu2) of the phosphorus‐containing bicyclobutane zirconium complex family was synthesized by reaction between tetraphosphazirconocene derivative [Cp′′2Zr(η2‐P4)] and a phosphaalkyne with the release of a formal P2 unit. Synthetic evidence of another unknown isomer [Cp′′2Zr(η2‐P2(CtBu)2)] was found; according to DFT calculations, it is the stable form if a Cp′′2Zr moiety is used.
