A Self-Calibrating Localization Solution for Sport Applications with UWB Technology

Abstract: This study addressed the problem of localization in an ultrawide-band (UWB) network, where the positions of both the access points and the tags needed to be estimated. We considered a fully wireless UWB localization system, comprising both software and hardware, featuring easy plug-and-play usability for the consumer, primarily targeting sport and leisure applications. Anchor self-localization was addressed by two-way ranging, also embedding a Gauss–Newton algorithm for the estimation and compensation of anten… Show more

“…For faster deployment, there are several works that have proposed the automatic calculation of the positions of anchors [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ]. These works need the anchors to communicate with each other, which increases their power consumption.…”

“…Thus, reduced power consumption becomes crucial. Another setback of [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ] is that a communication link must be added to a central computer to decide when the moment of calibration is, and when the moment of normal operation begins. The need for a central computer can be burdensome, especially in a large road construction site of hundreds of metres.…”

“…Self-localization on anchors was also proposed by Piavanini et al which is applied to sports applications by estimating the AP position. This process, of course, avoids manually measuring the distance between anchors in obtaining the entire anchor geometry [107].…”

“…RTLSs performing time-based localization with UWB technology have subsequently been deployed in many applications, such as the monitoring of equipment and staff in healthcare [12][13][14], monitoring of vehicles [15,16] and secure access with UWB-based car keys [17], monitoring in underground mines [18][19][20], monitoring in robotics [21], monitoring of long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) sensors [22], and the monitoring of athletic performance data in sports [23][24][25].…”
