A Self-Matting Waterborne Polyurethane Coating for PVC Artificial Leather

Abstract: A type of polyester-based self-matting waterborne polyurethane (ESMWPU) with an excellent matte effect of 0.8° and transmittance of 78.5% for PVC artificial leather was synthesized. The influence of synthesis parameters, including R value, crosslinking and hydrophilic group content, on coating gloss and transmittance was investigated. Meanwhile, the properties necessary for applying water-based resins to plasticized PVC were detailed. The results demonstrated that R value, crosslinking degree and hydrophilic g… Show more

“…Artificial coated fabrics, also referred to as artificial/synthetic leather in the market, are a composite material that consists of a textile with an application of a polymer in the form of a paste, plastisol, or emulsion. Their structure generally consists of the surface effect layer, surface layer, intermediate layer, and adhesive layer [22]. Although different types are currently present in the market, the most common polymers used are polyurethane (PU), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or polypropylene (PP) [21].…”

“…17 The internal crosslinking method involves the introduction of crosslinking monomers such as trimethylolpropane (TMP) to increase the degree of crosslinking of the polymer and increase the emulsion particle size, thus reducing the gloss of the paint film. 18 The phase separation method takes advantage of the tendency of uneven shrinkage during the drying of the two phases, which leads to a rough surface of the paint film and manifests as low gloss. 19 Different strategies for preparing matte polyurethane coatings by chemical methods are still mainly to increase the particle size of emulsions and prepare emulsions with large particle size and wide particle size distribution, thus improving the roughness of the paint film and achieving a self-matte finish.…”
