A self‐regulation account of the job performance–job satisfaction relationship

Abstract: We present a self‐regulation account of the job performance–job satisfaction relationship according to which job performance leads to job satisfaction, if it involves optimal expectancies for successful performance. Using response surface methodology (n = 747 employees), we found that employees who held overly negative (self‐effacement) or overly positive self‐perceptions of performance (self‐enhancement) gained less satisfaction from their jobs. As hypothesized by self‐discrepancy theory, self‐effacement prom… Show more

“…Although these are important components of job performance and job satisfaction, the relationship between more complex job variables can differ. Therefore, our study's results must be interpreted cautiously as evidence of causality among "task variables" that might explain causality among the "job variables" examined in dozens of cross-sectional (e. g. Heidemeier & Moser, 2019). and longitudinal studies (e. g., Eberegbe & Giovanis, 2020).…”

“…Job satisfaction is a topic that generates significant interest for both employees and company managers (Robertson, Gockel & Brauner, 2013). In this sense, the literature has indicated a positive relationship between job satisfaction and job performance (Han, Song & Whang, 2021;Heidemeier & Moser, 2019;Kessler, Lucianetti, Pindek, Zhu & Spector, 2020). Job satisfaction, defined as the "pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one's job or job experience" (Locke, 1976(Locke, , p. 1300, is a multidimensional construct due to the different professions' very nature (García Torres, 2019).…”

“…The ability to manage these emotions allows employees to work in the desired atmosphere that enables them to consistently produce outstanding work results. When actual performance does not meet a self-set standard, such as individual expectations, selfregulation requires action to bring oneself in line with the self-set standard (Heidemeier & Moser, 2019).…”
