A self-sufficient pressure pump using latex balloons for microfluidic applications

Abstract: Here, we demonstrate a self-sufficient, inexpensive and disposable pressure pump using commercially available latex balloons. The versatility of the pump is demonstrated against various microfluidic structures, liquid viscosities, and ambient temperatures. The flow rate of the pump can be controlled by varying the size and thickness of the balloon. Importantly, the soft structure of the balloon allows for almost instantaneous change of the flow rate upon manual squeezing of the balloon. This feature has been u… Show more

“…The pressure of the balloons depended on the thickness of the balloon shell as well as the circumference of the inflated balloon, as detailed in our recent work 37 . We coupled a pair of double-layered latex balloons with a circumference of 77.5 and 73.5 cm ( P water ~ 4.75 kPa and P oil ~ 4.1 kPa) to the water and oil inlets.…”

“…Reinforcing the balloon with elastane fibers enables operation at pressures sufficient to achieve shear stresses required for investigating the mechanobiology of human aortic endothelial cells 29 . While the affordability, simplicity, and scalability of balloon pumps renders them widely applicable to microfluidic devices, pressure loss from the balloon can reduce the flow rate over time 28 . Consequently, more expensive approaches, such as an Arduino microcontroller, are needed to achieve the constant aspiration volumes required for the micropipetting steps in preparation of samples for qPCR.…”

“…Recently, the syringe pump has become a popular DIY project for accurately dispensing fluid at a low cost 15 – 17 . One of the most inexpensive pump designs utilizes commercially available latex balloons to control the rate of fluid flow by varying the size and thickness of the balloon 28 . Reinforcing the balloon with elastane fibers enables operation at pressures sufficient to achieve shear stresses required for investigating the mechanobiology of human aortic endothelial cells 29 .…”
