A semiotic theory of memory: between movement and form*

Abstract: In the multidisciplinary field of memory studies, remembering and forgetting have mainly been analyzed following two ideal-typical models: memory-as-containment (exemplified by the notions of framework and site of memory) and memory-as-flow (epitomized by the notions of afterlife and mnemohistory). These two models are often presented as mutually exclusive and counterposed. Yet, in linking past with present, and when connecting different spaces and generations, memory is always the result of circulation (flow)… Show more

“…There is a growing interest in understanding the application of semiotic capture especially in the marketing and tourism literature (see Ghodrati, 2022; Kirici Tekeli et al ., 2022). Complex semiotic perspective or characteristics are often studied in the discipline of communication and physical and social sciences (see Mittelberg, 2018; Salerno, 2021). This research explores how semiotics be integrated into the process of determining audience response in a marketing and tourism-centric promotional contents.…”

“…Memories are connected to how individuals create meaning and make sense of a situation (Stolt and Lundh, 2021). Memories have been studied from two perspectives: memory-as-containment and memory-as-flow (Salerno, 2021). Memory-as-containment perceives memory as a network of relationships that creates more complicated structures within social or symbolical structures; memories are stored into equivalence classes (categorization), useful for individuals' learning (Knapp and Anderson, 1984).…”

“…Memory-as-containment perceives memory as a network of relationships that creates more complicated structures within social or symbolical structures; memories are stored into equivalence classes (categorization), useful for individuals' learning (Knapp and Anderson, 1984). The memory-as-flow perspective states that all information accumulated from previous experiences forms different patterns according to their triggering stimulus (Salerno, 2021). General elements are first retrieved during retrieval, establishing memory context, and then more details emerge to complete the memory (Lampinen et al, 2021).…”
