Abstract: An experience can be defined as anything that stimulates the senses, heart and mind. Senses play a central role in individuals' perceptions of the surrounding world. Thus, research on tourist experiences' sensory dimensions is pivotal to improving visitor management in tourism. Recent studies have shown that successful tourism destinations attract tourists using a systematic approach to stimulating all the senses. This paper discusses the case of a multisensory criteria model applied to the tourism destination… Show more

“…Although sensation and perception are central to and precede almost all aspects of reflection, behaviour, and cognition following an experience, more research on coherence between the sensory aspects and customer evaluation of an experience is needed (Agapito, 2020;Agapito et al, 2017;Lv et al, 2020;Meacci & Liberatore, 2018). Building on the above, we propose that staging experiences with sensory tools will increase travellers' positive memories of an experience, and that this effect will be partially mediated by cognition and affection.…”

“…Feedback is then activated in the form of an emotional experience as a response to these stimuli (Feng, 2010). Hence, the sensory system perceives the surrounding world, the affective system evokes emotional responses to stimuli, and the cognitive system makes meaning and processes information (Meacci & Liberatore, 2018). Finally, the experience is internalized and becomes a memory.…”

“…Several articles have shown the importance of the senses in the tourism experience (Agapito, Mendes, Valle, & Almeida, 2014;Goggin et al, 2017;Lee, Heere, & Chung, 2013;Meacci & Liberatore, 2015), while others have studied the significance of the emotions (Correia, Oliveira, & Pereira, 2017;Hosany, Prayag, Deesilatham, Cauševic, & Odeh, 2015;Prayag, Hosany, Muskat, & Del Chiappa, 2017;Shoval, Schvimer, & Tamir, 2018) and some articles have considered the influence of memories (Ali, Hussain, & Ragavan, 2014;Kastenholz, Carneiro, Marques, & Loureiro, 2017;Pezzi & Vianna, 2015;Quadri-Felitti & Fiore, 2013). The relationship between the senses, emotions and memories is, however, a theme on which there has been a lack of attention (Dias, Correia, & Cascais, 2017).…”
