“…Among the antigens utilized in the DTH, from the published literature, are: tetanus toxoid, Candida albicans, Mycobacterium bovis [Bacillus CalmettGuerin (BCG)], SRBC, bovine serum albumin (BSA), KLH, and ovalbumin (OVA) (Lagrange and Mackaness, 1975;Vos, 1980;Whittingham et al, 1982;Henningsen et al, 1984;Hurtrel et al, 1984;Exon et al, 1990;Nghiem et al, 2002). Unfortunately, many of these antigens, such as SRBC, BSA, OVA, and KLH, are also capable of initiating a robust humoral immune response, and the negating effects of antigen-specific antibody (Ab) production on the DTH response are well-documented (Mackaness et al, 1974;Morikawa et al, 1991).…”

“…The sensitization dose may have been too high in some trials. Henningsen et al [10] got sig nificantly lower responses and sometimes even in duced tolerance when they injected more than 150 pg bovine serum albumin subcutaneously. However af ter casein feeding we did observe sensitization, and for this reason we consider the lymphocyte transfor mation test to be one possibility for detecting sensiti zation by food proteins, albeit not a very sensitive one.…”

“…DTH is categorized as a type IV allergic reaction and is mediated by sensitized T-cells. In this study the arthus reaction and DTH were examined using the methods of Henningsen et al (1984) with some modifications. Rats were sensitized by injecting 0.1 ml of an emulsion with BSA in saline (2 mg/ml) plus Freund's complete adjuvant (Nacalai Tesque Co., Ltd., Kyoto, Japan) (1:1) into the base of the tail on the seventh day of test compound administration and were challenged by 75-^jl injection of 2% heat-aggregated BSA in the right rear footpad 1 day after the last test compound administration (8 days after sensitization).…”
