A series of (E)-1,2-diaryldigermenes incorporating bulky Eind groups: structural characteristics and absorption properties

Abstract: A series of (E)-1,2-diaryldigermenes, (Eind)ArGe=GeAr(Eind) [Ar = phenyl (2), thiophen-2-yl (3), 9,9-dimethyl-2-fluorenyl (4) and 2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl (5)], supported by the fused-ring bulky 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octaethyl-s-hydrindacen-4-yl (Eind) groups, have been obtained as yellow-orange to...

“…A novel bulky substituent, 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7‐octaethyl‐ s ‐hydrindacen‐4‐yl (Eind) group, was used for stabilizing the heavy atom‐containing double bond and increasing planarity of the π‐conjugated system. From the UV–vis absorption spectra, the red‐shifted optical bands were observed from silicon derivatives ( 14Si ) [55] compared to that of carbon ( 14C ), [56] whereas silicon ( 14Si ) and germanium ( 14Ge ) [57] derivatives showed the bands in the similar wavelength region. The synthesis of tin ( 15Sn ) [58] and lead ( 15Pb ) [59] derivatives were also achieved, and gradual red‐shifts of absorption bands were reported as increasing the periods.…”
