A service management toolkit for active networks

Abstract: Active networking, where network nodes perform customized processing of packets, is a rapidly expanding field of research. This paper investigates the realization of service management on a Virtual Active Network (VAN), the key concept in our active network management framework [11]. A VAN can be seen as a thin (software) layer in an active networking environment, which creates a generic service abstraction, offered by the provider to the customer. The VAN concept transforms a multi-domain situation into a sin… Show more

“…In AN, access to the resources of the active nodes can be controlled; hence, partitioning of resources can easily be implemented. An attempt in this direction is the virtual active network (VAN) architecture [15,16]. In this architecture the network managers just define the user groups and the way resources are allocated to them.…”

“…In this way, the billing is more accurate. Additionally, in some AN architectures, such as the VAN framework [15,16] discussed previously, users may demand specific services and resources on specific nodes. This enables fine-grained SLAs that best meet users' needs.…”

“…An active network contains network nodes that perform customized processing of packets [15,16,17]. An active Web cluster system is an active network that has a collection of locally distributed servers interconnected by active switches [5,18], providing a Web application service.…”
