A Shear-Mode Piezoelectric Heterostructure for Electric Current Sensing in Electric Power Grids

Abstract: This paper presents a shear-mode piezoelectric current sensing device for two-wire power cords in electric power grids. The piezoelectric heterostructure consists of a cymbal structure and a permalloy plate. The cymbal structure is constructed from a permanent magnet, a brass cap, and shear-mode piezoelectric materials. The permalloy plate concentrates the magnetic field generated by the two-wire power cord on the magnet. Under the force amplification effect of the cymbal structure, the response of the device … Show more

“…Therefore, there is no reference report on modeling the transmitting process of the BAW antenna using FEA. However, it is well known that the aperture EM field of the material's surface is easy to obtain via FEA simulation based on the constitutive relation of ME material as shown in (3).…”

“…The shear piezoelectric effect has drawn great attention [10][11][12][13], which exhibits a higher piezoelectric constant compared with the conventional mode. Non-resonant current sensing devices based on cymbal structures have been developed [14,15], which explore the shear piezoelectric effect. The sensitivity and resolution for the single wire are respectively ~6.98 mV/A and 0.05 A [14], and those for the two-wire power cord are 12.74 mV/A and 0.04 A [15], respectively.…”

“…The device couples the alternating magnetic field of the current-carrying wire and vibrates at the frequency of the current. Recently, current sensors based on piezoelectric cymbal structures have been explored [20,21]. The resolution is 0.05 A [20] and 0.04 A [21] for a single wire and a two-wire power cord, respectively.…”
