A short daytime test using correlation dimension for respiratory movement in OSAHS

Abstract: In order to examine the pathology in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS), the nonlinear properties of respiratory movement and breath-to-breath variations during resting wakefulness with eyes closed was investigated.Recording of the respiratory movement using inductive plethysmography was performed on 14 patients with OSAHS and 13 control subjects for 2 h in the supine position during daytime. To calculate the correlation dimension (D2) for respiratory movement, an algorithm propo… Show more

“…Breathing patterns are altered by the onset and progression of respiratory diseases (Kuratomi et al 1985; Brack et al 2002; Miyata et al 2002; Yeragani et al 2002; Bien et al 2004; Giraldo et al 2004; Miyata et al 2004; Casaseca-de-la-Higuera et al 2006; Wysocki et al 2006; Ibrahim et al 2008; Veiga et al 2010). The mechanisms responsible for changes in the breathing pattern in ALI and ARDS are attributed to the fundamental pathophysiology of diffuse pulmonary infiltrates, altered ventilation-perfusion matching, progressive hypoxemia, reduced lung compliance and increased work of breathing (Gattinoni et al 1994; Pelosi et al 1995).…”

“…Previous studies have characterized ventilation with certain indicators of nonlinear determinism or complexity (see Donaldson, 1992;Hughson et al, 1995;Fortrat et al, 1997;Small et al, 1999;Burioka et al, 2002;Miyata et al, 2002;Yeragani et al, 2002;Akay et al, 2003;Akay and Sekine, 2004;Baldwin et al, 2004;Miyata et al, 2004). However, such descriptors are typically highly sensitive to noise, making them particularly misleading when applied to short and noisy biological time series (Barahona and Poon, 1996;Bruce, 1996).…”
