A Simple and Rapid Method for the Detection of Non-Ionic Surfactants

Abstract: A spectrophotometric approach for the detection of non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) has been proposed in this paper. This method does not involve extraction of the ion-associate with harmful solvents, but employs adhesion of the ion-association of potassium/non-ionic surfactants complex and tetraphenylporphyrin tetrasulfonic acid obtained by vigorous shaking. The adhered ion-associate was dissolved with water and its absorbance was measured. The sensitivity for Triton X-100 was determined to be 0.146 (expre… Show more

“…The methodology provides a detection range between 0.01 and 1 wt %, which covers the surfactant concentrations present in most industrial wastewater and municipal sewer discharges . However, even though the detection range is compared fairly with previously reported detection technologies, it is not surprising that the minimum quantification limit of the photonic crystal-sensing materials for surfactants is less sensitive to the detection limits of other detection methods. , …”

“…4 Surfactant solutions of various types such as cationic, anionic and nonionic are used as organized media. 5,6 The main analytical forms of application of ionic surfactants in the analysis are their associations with counterions of organic reagents or metal complexes of the ionic type. 1 Solutions of nonionic surfactants are often used to modify the properties of organic 6 or metal complex associates 7 at surfactant concentrations above CMC.…”
