A simple and wide-range refractive index measuring approach by using a sub-micron grating

Abstract: This paper presents the design and simulation results of a high-precision low-cost refractometer that demonstrates the main advantage of a wide measurement range (1 ≤ n ≤ 2). The proposed design is based on the diffractive properties of sub-micron gratings and Snell's Law. The precision and uncertainty factors of the proposed system were tested and analyzed, revealing that the proposed refractometer demonstrates a wide measurement range with sensitivity of 10−4.

“…The reason why many researchers use diffraction grating to measure RI is that the measured range of RI can vary widely when diffraction gratings are used. 8) In this paper, we suggest a simple and inexpensive method to measure RI based on transmission diffraction gratings. Diffraction gratings have been fabricated by several optical fabrication methods including laser interference lithography 9,10) and fs-laser direct machining 11) and so on.…”

“…However, most of those sensing approaches require sophisticated facilities including beam splitter, prism and spectrometers and so on. Hence, a variant of optical sensors that have been drawn significant attentions are based on the use of diffraction optical element (DOE) 12 14 . Kumawat et al .…”
