A simple biological method for detecting streptococcal nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase.

Abstract: A biological method for detecting streptococcal nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADG) is presented, based on its ability to inhibit the growth of Haemophilus parainfluenzae. Three hundred clinical isolates of beta-haemolytic streptococci were tested. All isolates producing NADG belonged to Lancefield's group A, C, or G.

“…Rates of the NADG-positive strains tested in the present study seemed to be slightly high in groups A (91%) and C (61%), but low in group G (27%) in comparison with those in other studies: 47 to 84% in group A, 20 to 58% in group C and 59 to 67% in group G [6,7,9,10]. The different methods employed for the detection of NADG as well as different sources of the strains tested seem to account for the variety of these results.…”

“…NADG has been extensively studied since the first report by Carlson et al [l], and at present it is suggested that NADG is involved in pathogenic@, particularly in leucotoxicity [2]. Clinitally, detection of antibodies against NADG provides important information in the diagnosis of streptococcal infection [3-51. For the detection of NADG, a spectrophotometric method using cyanide [2], a fluorescent method using W light [6], and a biologi-cal NADG inhibits growth of Haemophilus parainfluenzae [7] are employed. The spectrophotometric method is not suitable for handling a large number of samples because of its complexity.…”

“…This isolate also produced a 47 kd antigen nortnally found in nephritogenic strains of group A streptococci. Other physiological similarities shared by group G and group A streptococci include the ability to produce the serum opacity reaction (23), NADase (23, 25) DNase and ability to grow in fresh human blood (26). The biochemical properties of group G streptococci isolated from both cats and humans are also very sitnilar to those of group A streptococci (27).…”
