A Simple Educational Method for the Measurement of Liquid Binary Diffusivities

Abstract: A simple low-cost experiment has been developed for the measurement of the binary diffusion coefficients of liquid substances. The experiment is suitable for demonstrating molecular diffusion to small or large undergraduate classes in chemistry or chemical engineering. Students use a cell phone camera in conjunction with open-source image processing software to measure concentrations of a colored species in a clear liquid, as a function of position and time. Three fundamental principles in mass transfer and sp… Show more

“…Several authors report methods that use ambient light, , a commercial or homemade light box, , an LCD screen, , or other white LED illumination (Figure a,b) to illuminate samples and a digital camera to record their absorbances. Color digital cameras collect data in three color channels [red, green, and blue (RGB)], corresponding to pixels that are sensitive to light at wavelengths of approximately 620, 550, and 450 nm, respectively (Figure c) .…”

“…In chemistry, digital image processing has been used as an alternative to conventional equipment, demonstrating multiple applications in the detection of colors in colorimetric reactions and processes. The low cost of this type of image processing technique and the potential to use mobile devices to capture the images make this a very attractive methodology, including in the teaching of chemistry and chemical engineering, as noted by several authors. The digital images of colorimetry tests taken using smartphone cameras may be quantified in terms of the RGB color system using applications such as PhotoMetrix PRO or Color Grab, , which can be downloaded free of charge.…”
