A Simple Technique for Signal Compression in High Dynamic Range, High Speed X-ray Pixel Detectors

Abstract: New X-ray pixel detectors are required to cope with the demanding requirements from XFEL sources, in terms of high speed and high dynamic range. Such detectors have to provide low electronics noise to allow single photon detection at low signal intensities. At high photons intensity, a signal compression technique may be introduced to allow the detection system to cope with the required dynamic range. In this work, we propose a very simple front-end (FE) solution based on an input PMOS transistor placed on the… Show more

“…This voltage across the resistor reduces the absolute value of the drain-source voltage of the PMOSFET and pushes it to operate deeper in the triode regime. Therefore, a nonlinear behaviour of the PMOSFET can be obtained [5].…”

“…In the DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC) [3] the non-linear characteristic is achieved at sensor level by exploiting the feature of the DSSC device. In the frame of the DSSC collaboration, other solutions, in which the signal compression is obtained at front-end level, have been recently proposed in [4], [5]. In the LPD (Large Pixel Detector), project three channels with different gains are read out in parallel.…”

In the frame of the DSSC collaboration, other solutions, in which the signal compression is obtained at front-end level, have been recently proposed in [2,3]. In the LPD project, each cell features three channels, each with a different gain, which are all read out in parallel.…”
