A Simplified 5-step Model for Training Laparoscopic Urethrovesical Anastomosis

Abstract: By using this model and dividing a complicated surgical step to simplified tasks, we were able to improve trainee performance significantly in a short time. A training program for basic and advanced laparoscopic skills should be incorporated into the syllabus of urologists-in-training and available to those who wish to gain experience in laparoscopic surgery.

“…Teber and colleagues 6 developed a standardized step-by-step program to improve skills and enable trainees not experienced in laparoscopy to increase reproducible performance in reconstructive laparoscopy. Katz and colleagues 7 proposed a simplified 5-step model for training LUA. By using this model and dividing complicated surgical steps into simplified tasks (e.g., passage of ligature, intracorporal knotting, intracorporeal suturing, linear anastomosis, circular running suture anastomosis with chicken skin), they were able to substantially improve trainee performance.…”

“…The view that the posterior wall of the anastomosis was the most frequent site of urinary fistulas had been accepted with the urethrovesical anastomosis experience accumulated. To achieve satisfactory curative effects, many improvements were proposed and adopted [10,11] . As a result, the technique of SNM with reinforced posterior fixation was performed in our subsequent cases.…”

“…It is widely accepted that the urethrovesical anastomosis is one of the main obstacles to a wider application of LRP and the most time-consuming step of the procedure [6,7,10,11] . In order to simplify this procedure, the running suture techniques were recommended in most literatures [6,7,10] .…”

“…France and Germany) have developed urologic laparoscopy since the early 1990s (Guillonneau et al 1996;Abbou et al 1999;Rassweiler et al 1998). Moreover, investigators from France have described a useful five-step model for laparoscopic training (Katz et al 2003). According to these authors a training programme, including five simple tasks, improves the trainee performance in a short time.…”
