A Simplified Analysis Method for the Deformation Response of an Existing Tunnel to Ground Surcharge Based on the Pasternak Model

Abstract: Surface surcharge changes the existing equilibrium stress field of the stratum and adversely affects the existing tunnel. This paper presents a simplified analytical solution for calculating the longitudinal displacement of existing tunnels that are subjected to adjacent surcharge loading. Based on the Boussinesq solution, the distribution of the additional load matrix caused by the surface surcharge on the existing tunnel was obtained. A Euler–Bernoulli beam with a Pasternak foundation was used as a simplifie… Show more

“…In the Eq (8), F M e is the magnitude of axial force applied to the i-th unit, which will cause compression deformation u i e of the unit. F Si e is the shear force of the i-th unit, which will cause the horizontal displacement v i e of the unit.…”

“…Deng, et al [ 7 ] derived a prediction formula for surface settlement and deformation of existing pipelines caused by shield tunneling along curved paths, analyzing the associated disturbances. Wei and Jiang [ 8 ] presents a simplified analytical solution for calculating the longitudinal displacement of existing tunnels that are subjected to adjacent surcharge loading. Based on the Boussinesq solution, the distribution of the additional load matrix caused by the surface surcharge on the existing tunnel was obtained.…”

“…Urban underground rail transit plays an important role in daily commuting due to its advantages of efficiency and convenience (Chen et al, 2015;Huang and Zhan, 2019;Wei and Jiang, 2021). With the rapid development of urban rail transit networks, increasing demands of smoothness and safety of the in-service tunnels when subjected to limitation of available underground space, will conduct unforeseen adverse impacts on or even seriously damage to the adjacent in-service tunnels (Fang et al, 2022;Gan et al, 2022;Wei and Jiang, 2021;Zhang et al, 2022).…”

To ensure the serviceability of underlying shield tunnels, it is necessary to study responses of tunnel construction on the adjacent existing shield tunnels in the complex environment (Fang et al, 2023;Ma et al, 2023;Wei, 2023;Zhang et al, 2023a;Zhang et al, 2023b;Zhou et al, 2020).…”

“…This affects adjacent structures' behaviors, with variables such as the relative density of the ground, groundwater level, structure type, and tunnel location. Tunneling in urban areas is essential to understand the interactive behavior of pile foundation and adjacent structures, and many studies have been carried out on this through closed form, numerical analysis [1][2][3][4], 1 g laboratory model testing [5], centrifuge model testing [6,7], and field monitoring [8][9][10]. Among foundation types of structure, the piled raft is more rational than the conventional pile foundation, which does not consider the supporting load of the raft.…”
