A Simplified Technique for Orientation of a Bone Anchored Auricular Prostheses: a Clinical Report

Abstract: BackgroundA simple technique was presented in this clinical report for orientation of a bone anchored auricular prosthesis.MethodsThe proposed technique includes drawing the intact ear on a transparent celluloid paper or radiographic film and flipping it to the opposite side and relating it to the fixed anatomical features on the face of patient.ResultsThe drawing, by this way provides a simple and easy way to duplicate and transfer the exact size and position of the intact ear to the defect side.ConclusionsTh… Show more

“…Intrinsic coloration is better than extrinsic coloration as it makes the prosthesis less susceptible to environmental changes and provides better handling. According to studies by Leow et al [ 26 ] coloring pigments are known to undergo discoloration after some time due to exposure to ultraviolet light, elevated temperatures, and sweat. [ 27 28 29 30 ] The patient was informed regarding the weathering of the prosthesis and was advised for refabrication of the prosthesis when required.…”

“…This article describes a simple technique to rehabilitate patients with auricular defects which are both aesthetically acceptable and economical for the individual. The various options available to retain the ear prosthesis areimplant retained, [13,14] adhesive retained, magnet retained, [15] hair band retained and spectacle retained prosthesis [16]. Implant retained is though superior, patient was apprehensive of the surgical procedure and so we opted for a spectacle frame and hair band retained prosthesis.…”

“…The wax pattern was optimally retentive and stable on his face. [6] Final finishing of the wax pattern wax performed on the cast of the rudimentary ear. The finished pattern was then sealed on the cast model.…”
