A Simulated Mass Casualty Incident Triage Exercise: SimWars

Abstract: Introduction This multipatient simulation exercise encompasses triage by hospital medical providers during a mass casualty incident (MCI) involving gas line explosion with building collapse. The SimWars format allows two teams to participate in identical simulations coupled with active audience observation, followed by facilitated group discussion. The exercise requires real-time knowledge application of MCI management and helps learners develop a framework for rapidly classifying and dispositioni… Show more

“…While disaster preparedness is something that residency directors desire to add to current curricula, 10 previous traditional methods for teaching mass casualty and disaster management have been difficult to implement, especially for smaller programs with limited funds and resources. 12 14 Though concepts can be taught through didactics, practical training remains a challenge.…”

“…While this type of simulation has many benefits to learners, conducting these exercises is both costly and time consuming. 12 14 Such activities are undoubtedly difficult for smaller departments and residency programs to accomplish. To our knowledge, no low-fidelity module for disaster preparedness exists.…”

“…Participants are assigned roles and are tasked with triaging patients while observers complete a checklist on each patient. Results show that both participants and observers develop new understanding about how to triage patients in MCE 48. Another technique is to utilize one hour computer-based simulations to assess management and self-efficacy.…”

“…De acordo com o autor (32) as simulações são uma oportunidade de aprender e praticar conhecimentos e melhorar a autoconfiança do profissional. Bentley et al (33) cita que esse tipo de exercício melhora a comunicação com a equipe, além de reforçar as habilidades de triagem rápida e precisa, permitindo maximizar o aprendizado preenchendo lacunas entre teoria e a prática.…”
