A simulation model for the management and expansion of extended port terminal operations

Abstract: This study introduces a discrete event simulation model for the analysis of bulk carrier unloading and material transport, storage and discharge at Europe’s largest alumina refinery, RUSAL Aughinish Alumina. With novel features such as the integration of additional unloading functionality, auxiliary infrastructure units, as well as efficient maintenance scheduling into the material processing chain, the model is used to predict and evaluate the performance gain in the port system in the context of long-term in… Show more

“…In order to further verify the effectiveness of the simulation data, the mean error ( ) which is proposed in the literature [25] (defined in (2)) is introduced to quantify the mean absolute percentage error. In (2), is defined as a quantity of one indicator, ℎ is introduced as notation for the historical value of this indicator, and is defined as the value of the respective indicator obtained in the th simulation.…”

“…In addition, the level of reliability and capacity of the ports tend to be limited and it could therefore be difficult to adapt to IWT (Medda & Trujillo, 2010). It is also a question of whether a certain port can accommodate shipments of all kinds, since loading and unloading operations require equipment that might not be available at every port (Cimpeanu et al, 2017). Thus, when aiming to improve berth activity, a trade-off occurs between investing in equipment upgrades and developing the productivity in the present system.…”

“…In formulating a design of CT facilities, this work considered minimizing total passage time because in practice, time-related parameters serve as primary indicators of CT performance (e.g., Yun and Choi, 1999;Cartenì and Luca, 2012;Cimpeanu et al, 2017). Total passage time is defined as the time elapsed before shipment arrival at a container yard after handling by QCs.…”
