A Single-Center Experience of 260 Consecutive Patients Undergoing Capsule Endoscopy for Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Abstract: The yield of clinically important findings on CE in patients with OGIB is 53% and is greater in patients with obscure-overt than obscure-occult GI bleeding. Angioectasias account for the majority of significant lesions in both groups. Compared with pre-CE, patients had clinical improvement post-CE in medical interventions for OGIB. Complications of CE occur in less than 2% of cases.

“…The procedure also requires less physician training than advanced endoscopic techniques. The main disadvantages are the inability to manoeuvre the capsule, the lack of therapeutic capabilities, and the relative contraindication of possible strictures, because of the risk of impaction [7,8]. Furthermore, although most images are excellent, they are still not comparable to the view achieved at conventional endoscopy with gas insufflation.…”

“…During an 8-h inspection, problems of missed diagnosis and ileus are possible [3]. To improve the situation, active CE equipment with a self-actuation mechanism, which is called capsule robot, is currently under development in several laboratories [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Additional data supported that patients with positive VCE require longer hospitalization as well as higher number of blood units transfused than those with negative VCE exams (19,21,25,50,55). Even on the occasion of a rebleeding episode, patients with negative index VCE require neither hospital admission nor blood transfusions (25).…”

“…In a trial of 260 patients, outcomes appeared to improve after VCE: patients experienced fewer bleeding events and interventions per month following VCE than those they did pre-VCE (50). However, these results are limited by the variable interval of patient follow-up preand post-VCE, as in any retrospective study.…”
